I think France will be humiliated tonight. Koscielny and Cabaye are two welcome reinforcements but it's not enough. I wonder why Blanc doesn't give Valbuena a chance. He doesn't need a midfield consisting of Diarra, M'Vila and Cabaye. Better teams than France have been beaten up by worse opponents than Spain because they've played that way. Holland springs to mind.

Not sure Spain will hammer them, not that I think that France have looked in any way convincing - just suspect that Spain may not break them down too easily.

Nasri and Evra are the only major cocks really. You guys are too easily wound up if you hate the likes of Ribery, Benzema (though he has been bugging me these Euros), Ben Arfa, etc.

We really shouldn't be hammered at all if we pack the midfield and have outballs against Jordi Alba who is positionally suspect (he's just a left winger pushed back) and Arbeloa who is slow. Ribery could ruin him on a counter, and a cross to Giroud who could beast both Pique and Ramos. Benzema will be faffing about though.

So many wrong things here. Valbuena has been awful for Marseille all season and even when he was "in form" he's not a very good player. We have far better than him in his position. It's kind of like saying "why don't England give Downing a chance" when they have Theo/Oxlade/Young. And yes, we do need a Diarra/M'Vila/Cabaye midfield to block the central zone. Block that zone and Spain have no threat (unless they get desperate halfway through the second half and bring on Navas), then they can tippy-tappy all they want, eventually get tackled off the ball and we have Ribery and the CF (it really needs to be Giroud but Benzema will play again) in open space. Spain are even more one-dimensional and noticeably lacking Messi now than they were 2 years ago. Only Iniesta has improved, everyone else in that first team squad has regressed.

All I'm saying is, with the squad Blanc has picked Valbuena looks like the best option if you want to give it a fair chance. The national team is different compared to club football, as illustrated by Benzema who's been one of the worst strikers in the entire tournament so far. The problem with playing Diarra, M'Vila and Cabaye at the same time is that you've got no angles. Basically you're fucked if Spain score a goal. Opponents have tried to close down the central space against them for six years now and failed miserably nearly every time. Don't see any reason why this current version of France would succeed just because they decide to play like Greece.

Oh, and Valbuena was second in the assist table in Ligue 1, wasn't he? I think he was one of few decent players in a useless Marseille side. Nothing like Downing at all.

I agree that we're fucked if they score a goal. That's why the plan is to not give them any space in CM to play in so that they can't score goals. Obviously if we pull an Ireland and concede in the first 10 minutes then the whole plan is fucked. Valbuena offers no defensive anything and he's not great at going forward. He's crap mate. I'd rather give Ben Arfa a chance.

Apparently Nasri has been too much of a cock and is now not playing - hurm. He could have been helpful to crowd out the centre from the wing and spray a long pass to Ribery or Benzema.

I maintain strongly that this Spanish side isn't as good as 2010 and that it was Aragones who got the balance perfect (although that was a very different side). If you can Chelsea your way through 2 matches against Barcelona, you can certainly do it for 1 match against Spain.

Yeah, fair enough. Someone who can create a bit is needed in there though. Closing down opponents is a team effort anyway. I don't think it matters how many defensive midfielders you've got if the rest of the team doesn't work their socks off for ninety minutes. That's what it takes to beat Spain even on an off day. I think Italy played a very intelligent game against them in the group stage without compromising too much with their shape. There's no reason France can't repeat that with the players they've got.

Any idea what he did? I read that Blanc was upset with Ben Arfa too.
