What's all the concern over the 3.5 years? It's standard practice! When there's 2 years left on the contract, you offer 5 years. When there's 1 year left, you offer 4 years. When there's 6 moths left, you offer 3.5. I suspect if he had signed a 4 year deal last summer no-one would've said anything about the length.

We'll have to renegotiate in a couple of years but that's similar with all players.

I'm very happy he has signed. There's something very unique about him. He'll guarantee you goals too - has some off days but play him upfront and I think he's a good bet for 25 goals even now.

Why would time left have any impact on the length offered? Unless we were talking about extensions... But then you'd offer ones with less time left longer contracts. So quite a bizzare way to look at it.

It helps us to get perspective. As I said, if he had signed a 4 year deal (or a 3 year extension) last summer, I don't think anyone would've raised an eyebrow. We often have to renegotiate with most players 2-3 years after a new deal. E.g. Even if Gibbs is here until 2018, if he cements his place as a key player then we'll have to give him more money according to the market rate. I don't think this 3.5 years thing is an issue. Might seem shorter but he only had 6 months left.

These days most players don't give an f about loyalty. Let's face it he could have earned MUCH more signing on a free for many clubs. Thing about Theo is he's now consistently getting 10 plus goals and assists and is a good pro so kudos to the club.

Yup very true. I doubt he cares about Arsenal tbh but at least he seems to care about his career. He might've got some lucrative offers in the summer being a free agent. I would put Theo's market value at something like £20m considering what he offers, his experience but young age. Chelsea might've made him a bit-part player but gone in with a huge signing on fee. At least theo seems to care about furthering his career - I think he's in the best hands for that. Wenger would've sold him the 'I can turn you into Henry' line whether he believes it or not.

Have a feeling he has a good understanding of the picture over the next few years. I think we are in fine shape moving forward

Fair play to him also for not getting pissed off when he was benched initially.
Looks like he turned down the lower offer and thought "i'll show you".
He did and got paid for it.
Now let's hope he keeps up with the same hunger and kicks on from here, not go back to "I'm just happy to be here".

He's an ambitious guy so I doubt he'll just kick back and rekax but that's not going to stop people of accusing him of doing so 🙂
Happy he has finally ended this seemingly never ending negotiation.
Annoyed that the official confirmation is not on page 105 as I predicted.

So what do you guys think changed to get Theo to sign?

Did we pony up to a 100k, offer him a shorter contract, convince him of signings or was it limited interest from other English clubs?

Clearly something happened between the summer, shit even two weeks ago, and now to get Theo signed up.
