I don't understand this idea that Lampard is a two-bob footballer who just happens to score a lot of goals. Where did it originate from? Jealous West Ham fans?

No one thinks or says he's a two bob footballer. He isn't as flashy or entertaining though. Same as Walcott.

That description can't be more wrong. Lampard is singlehandedly one of the best centre midfielders of his generation.

Indeed, a team can have too much possession and attack for too long.
We don't always play to Theo's strength's.

I still don't get that though. Gerrard is hardly Mr Flair and doesn't really do anything Lampard doesn't. Gerrard WAS a bit more explosive and quicker but other than that, Lampard has been the better player over the last decade.

They disliked him because they thought he only got so much game time because of his dad. He was overrated. They thought Scott Cannon and Matt Holland were better players and Harry Redknapp had to explain that Lampard and Rio would make it to the highest level of the game. They both did.

There's a video of a West Ham AGM on youtube where redknapp defends Lampard and the guys in the crowd are saying that Cannon and Holland have far more potential and deserve to play more.

They were very wrong in the end 😆

It was also claimed by some idiots that lampard used to score a disproportionate number of flukey deflected goals. One of those idiots definitely wasn't me.

😆 I remember that even Rooney mentioned Lampard's deflected goals when it looked like a goal of his was going to be credited to someone else.

Pretty sure the deflected goal stuff was mainly a jibe by rival fans, much like calling him Fat. Of course some constantly hearing this decide to take it seriously.

Lampard is basically like van Nistlerooy, in that he's smart and does everything to precision. However, these sorts of players are never going to be scream 'world class' at you when watching them unless they're scoring goals. Theres nothing magical about them when you watch them. No powerful runs, no real dribbling ability, passing is solid/clever rather than spectacular, no real pace, no tricks, essentially nothing that really catches the eye. Just clever movement, clever passing and banging them in.

The problem Theo has is that, he's not smart and doesn't do everything to precision.

There was a longish period when Lampard had a very poor conversion rate and used to monopolise Chelsea's opportunities—or at least people used to talk about it that way. I bet his career shots to goal ratio isn't too low, can't be better than 7 or 8 shots per goal.

Chelsea used Lampard in the way that Liverpool failed to use Gerrard.

Do you consider him a central midfielder? Because If he's, I wouldn't say he's one of the best in that position simply because he lacks the ability to run games. You can't be one of the best central midfielders if you can't dictate the pace of the game and influence the way your team plays IMO.

He can do a lot of things(passing, vision, tackling, positioning etc) in CM at a pretty decent standard but his stand out qualities are in the final 3rd, namely; the timing of his runs and his finishing. He's had a great craeer, but I wouldn't go as far as saying he's one of the best CMs of his generation. Judging him purely on what he does in CM, he doesn't come close to Xavi and Pirlo IMO.

My point was Lampard and Walcott aren't flashy or entertaining players, and no, that doesn't mean they are crap.

Redknapp was pretty much bang on there. Predicted the career trajectory of each of the three mentioned players very accurately. Canham amounted to nothing, Holland had a decent spell at the top level and Lampard went on to win everything in the English and European game reaching cult status in the process.

Yeah, I've seen that clip. I know they started the 'Fat Frank' chants. Figured they maybe were behind the deflection stuff too. I read an interview with Lampard last year where he talked about how he despised the West Ham fans. He said they cheered when he broke his leg early on in his career.

Yes, I consider him as a CM. He isn't close to Xavi and Pirlo, he is a different kind of player. He can dictate pace of the game, his passing is very underrated and his vision is actually pretty good. Just because he is great in timing of runs and scoring goals doesn't mean he is a AM.
