Therefore, as a footballer he's average.
That does not mean he's not an asset, whatever aspects of his game that are above average allow him to be a match winner. So I can forgive his ineptitude outside the box.
Indeed, the notion that a player has to be a well rounded total footballer is Wengerian nonsense, if you have a one trick pony thats a sensation you get him to do that trick you don't try to teach him to do others mediocrely.
Nah, that's not true. Wenger didn't invent the concept of well rounded footballers for a start and all the best teams have players who can be flexible and play different roles rather than have them shoehorned into the side.
Look at Man Utd. They play Welbeck (who is as one dimensional as they come) as a wide forward half of the time, Kagawa plays on the wing, Phil Jones plays in midfield, Chris Smalling's had a stint at right back, Rooney has played literally every where this season. If Wenger had tried something similar, this place would erupt. Similarly Spain played with Cesc Fabregas as a striker - how bizarre is that?
But Ferguson isn't wrong to try that, all the best teams have a similar theme because that's what good teams can do.
The managers that preach a rigid team are the Tony Pulis and Martin O'Neill's of this world.
