Don't think so. He has always been like this. Good stats but performance wise leaves much to be desired.

Unless he bulks up and gets those explosiveness like Bale.

I like him on the wing. He's effective there, and has proven to be so consistently over a number of seasons.

the assist stat as defined in publicly available sources is incredibly flawed and of little value in determining who "creates" goals.
the table isn't adjusted for quality of teammates.
the table isn't adjusted for quality of opposition.
the table isn't adjusted for whether a player starts or comes on as a sub against tired defences.
the table determines "goal involvement" solely by the last 2 players to touch the ball.

the only thing that table does is sort by (goals+assists)/minutes. for me, that's not very meaningful from a player evaluation standpoint. it's crude. it's like trying to scout basketball players and just picking them by height only. that's how you end up paying 40m for carroll and downing.

I don't think so, for one it excludes the likes of Ricky Lambert, Benteke and Michu, who could potentially fit the Andy Carroll/Stewart Downing profile.

Not saying Michu or Benteke are bad but the players on the list are a cut above.

Its a lot more like signing basketball players based on their minute/score ratio.

And Downings stats were poor at Villa so its definitely not why he was signed for so much.

you're surprised by that? it's just a list of attacking players owned by the top 4 clubs (and suarez).

try this: forwards for arsenal, chelsea, united, city and spurs and sort by minutes played. players on that list will be a cut above, too. must mean the list provides valuable insight, right?

Well it does to me, Rooney's been getting a lot of stick for his season (rightly so) but he's been productive enough, whereas the likes of Tevez and Aguero have had poor seasons without being productive. Also, I'm personally surprised Podolski has been as involved as he has. And Lukaku's inclusion is pretty big.

I don't know why I'm defending it really, I just thought it was a reasonable post to make for MistaT to make.

Obviously you wouldn't judge a striker solely based on that table but it does give you some idea on which players are most likely to be dangerous when on the pitch.
Lukaku was so impressive this season, particularly in scoring so many having come on later on in games.
Love that type of striker.

I'd like to see if Lukaku does as well with a regular run of starts. He gets a lot of goals from the bench, but I'm just wondering how big an affect his physicality impacts on his ability to score against tired defences later on in games.

Well Lukaku has had a great season. Rooney has been ok and Tevez and Aguero have both underperformed badly, especially Tevez. Apart from Hernandez those stats are exactly as you'd expect if you watched the PL regularly this season.

He's 19. I think he's only going to get better and better. He's already so strong and intelligent in his play, both those things will increase as he gets through his early 20s. If I was the new Chelsea manager I'd move Torres on and use Ba and Lukaku next season.

Yeah, that's what numbers are supposed to do.

to me, that table tells you absolutely nothing. if you have even a passing interest in the premier league, and you understand football, reading that table increases your knowledge by zero.

Every player on that list is highly effective and would walk into our first team squad (or is already in it).

Hardly absolutely nothing ... it's clearly a decent measure of some of the best forwards in the league, with notable exceptions, omissions, anomalies, adjustments for unusually bad form.

You could just go straight for minutes per goal (rather than "goal involvement", such a clunky phrase) and suddenly Rooney, Walcott, Mata and Podolski would plummet down the chart and the likes of Michu would surge up it. Wouldn't tell you more, just something different.
