My trusty old Asus U46 is serving mostly as a desktop unit for my TV these days, what with the screen starting to detach from the rest of the laptop, so I'm thinking again about an upgrade.

Anyone have any knowledge of ultra slim 13" laptops?

The new Dell XPS 13 just became available in Ireland, and it looks insane:

Trouble is Dell Ireland are only stocking the top-end models with touchscreen (not sure a touch screen is worth it) which start at €1400. In the states you can get the low end models with the same amazing chassis for $800 :angry:

Considering taking the plunge but am wondering if there'd be a better alternative as €1500 (need a few add-ons, like a HDMI adapter) is pretty steep. Alternatively, kami, if you happen to be coming over to Europe in the next month or two, I could have something for you to carry through customs... 😉

Did you end up finding the model you wanted? I looked but couldn't find any low or mid range models sold in Ireland.

Yeah, I don't like Windows 8 either. I have switched back to what I know and am comfortable with. 🙂
Guess it is mainly about getting used to it, but I am not going to bother until I must.

I haven't used Windows 8 except very briefly on a couple of tablets, but I have had to manage a couple of Windows 2012 servers. "Flat" window theme looks primitive and awful (and amazingly, not even anti-aliased?) and they got rid of the fucking Start button and replaced it with some "swipe the mouse to the corner" do-hickey?

Windows 8 is a big big failure.

Wait for windows 10 if you want. It's going to be out and according to many articles, that's the real deal.

Windows either hit it out of the park (7, XP) or fall flat on their face (8, Vista). I still can't find it in my heart to stop using Windows though. Like Clrnc, I have faith in 10.

Windows 8 is indeed horrid. When i first got my laptop with 8 on it I was thinking it was me....then after a while it was clear it is just horribly designed.

10 should be good as you mention, a good one has always followed a bad one.
The mad cynic in me says it is planned so we are forced to buy the next one.
I hate 8 and just got a mac.
