He hasn't played this season through injury, and when he played last season he came straight in cold and, for me, in the European games was your best player. Looked a class above your other defenders. For a 19 year old nobody to come in and play like he did last season was very impressive.

Vertonghen is a better defender than Vermaelen?
According to de Boer he is.
Remains to be seen - difficult to compare the two objectively when they are playing in different leagues.

Do you think that because Vermaelen has been iffy this season Dula?
Or do you think that even at his best Vermaelen is still not as good as Vertonghen?
I've seen next to nothing of Vertonghen so I don't really know.
I'm slightly concerned about Vermaelen's dip in form, hope he gets it together for the rest of the season.

He's basically a bigger, stronger version so he's better.

I still rate vermaelen highly and theres space for both here. Infact vertonghen would probably get playing time in the midfield.

He's a big bloke, with a natural power above what his frame suggests. What tells me he's a quality player is his composure. He's less bullish than vermaelen but few get the better of him physically.

Going to be one of the best defensive players in the world soon. At that price too, we'd be stupid not to throw our hat in the mix

Hmmm.
We do lack some power and muscle, that was evident in the away games to Milan, Sunderland and QPR.
From what you're saying he sounds to me like he'd be a starter.

I'm hoping wenger has in his mind the idea of forming a truly solid defence and platform for our speedy forwards to run riot.

We definitely need more physical robust players and vertonghen n mvila fall into that category

We do need that, our attitude to defending, particularly at the centre of our defence and at the heart of midfield, needs to be just that bit more resolute and brutal but controlled.

Does appear that Vertonghen in particular could bring this to the team - either one would be a signing in the right direction, getting both would be fairly incredible.

At the end of 2011, Jan Vertonghen was voted second in International's poll to find 'De grootste etterbak' ('the biggest arsehole'), presumably because of the enmity towards Ajax in the Netherlands.

I take that as a positive - he's good enough that fans of other teams hate him 🙂

It's not because people hate Ajax, it's because Vertonghen referred to Feyenoord as "kut kakkerlakken" (which means "cunty cockroaches" or maybe "fucking cockroaches"; I'm not sure which one is more apt... Gurgen?) when Ajax beat them in the cup final two years ago. He got hold of a microphone during the celebrations and just couldn't help himself.

He's got major attitude then and knows how to rile rival fans.
We've not had a player like that for years, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing as long as the player is motivated by loyalty and ambition for their own team and club, as opposed to being solely ego driven.

He can be an asshole on the field too at times, but we could do with one of those. I like him. Still not sure exactly why we need him when we have three excellent centrebacks already though, but if he's ready to sit on the bench then by all means.

Getting in mvila and vertonghen would make our base a lot more solid, we can then buy a few technically gifted fast midgets to compliment our pacy attack.
