A top calibre creator playing the role Cesc played would become a natural focal point for us. Other players with solid ball control and decision-making when under pressure ... cough Nasri ... would also help.
You are going to route your attack wide or long when you have players who don't reliably use the ball well through the midfield. This was the issue last season: we had consistently average performances from Ramsey and Rosicky for long stretches, and we had Song shouldering too much responsibility to create with forward chips.
I'm not saying we should go back to having a player in the "Cesc role". It has its upsides and downsides. One more top quality player, the return of Wilshere and the promotion of Oxlade-Chamberlain would refine our play considerably without needing a magic wand.
