Personally, I think that money played a minor role in RVP's process...I believe him...It sounded like the club's process for winning trophies and his process are miles apart.

That's serious nonsense what you are saying there. There is nothing to be gained for anyone by promoting ex-players who have been usurped by current players; that is why it doesn't happen. There is the odd icon, a Michael Jordan, a Ronaldo who can still get promoted at a lower rate for a while after retiring but VanPersie is nowhere near those levels. He doesn't even front Adidas right now (as an example). There is nothing iconic about him from even an Arsenal perspective, absolutely nothing that is marketable beyond his playing career.

We hear about how money is not his priority. Reading this sanctimonious dribble and considering its timing, I don't believe that for a second.

And of course - of course! - we hear about how much he loves Arsenal: if he actually loved it he wouldn't leave, and certainly not to a Premier League rival.

not for me. it's a lot of PR, and he screwed our negotiating position, but the arsenal board and management need to be called out. no one is pointing the finger at the board for failing to hold wenger and gazidis accountable for the fact that our last 3 captains (i'm not counting gallas) have left due to the club's ambitions not matching their own.

Anyway - as I said, I don't care if he wants to leave for money or trophies. No matter what our level of ambition, it's basically impossible for us to match the cash and probability of success on offer at City, who are the incumbent champions and owned by a spendthrift gazillionaire.

In my opinion, he's probably lying in public for the cash here. If he wants to go, he should put in that transfer request and stay schtoom until a deal is done. There will be good offers from ambitious suitors if he does so.

The 'ambition' of the club may be a problem (though a very, very complex one) but in this case it's just an easy crutch to lean on for another lost, gutless wonder allowing himself to be run by rent-seeking agents.

Got to agree, just woken to read his statement on the BBC. One year ago he was worthless. for 7 years he was useless to AFC, and after one flash in the pan sean he feels that he can call the big shots over a club that have nursed him off a career spent mostly on the injury table. What has happened to football?? We seem to say this every year!!

Do these 'Gems' not understand that if they did stay together then they would have a good chance of seeking their glory....more more..ooops no....trophies!

I can't hate him. And I don't blame him. He's got to look out for himself and his career. We are the ones not matching our top players ambitions. Both the coach and the club. This cycle will continue for fucking ever until something changes in the structure and running of the club.

We have to set our sights on trophy winning to become a relevant club again to top quality players.

Until that happens, this continues to happen, and we will keep blaming the wrong party.

Seriously though, I've told myself all year that I would understand if he wanted to leave if the club didn't put some effort into improving the team (I'm deliberately avoiding the term 'show some ambition' because Van Pussy has made me confused as to what it means). But actually I expected him to stay, or at worst leave with a shred of dignity and respect for his 'boyhood' club.
I think nearly all of us respected this thing not only as a footballer but as a man and are feeling a tad betrayed and/or foolish for having any faith in human integrity.

On another note, any chance this is a Rooney-esque pitch? Similar situation: star player, contract negotiations, arrogant enough to think they can gamble with peoples support/admiration for them in order to get what they want and still come out on top? (it worked for Rooney unfortunately)
