Win the league is talk we are not used to - we still were, for a while, but every year made us feel it is less realistic. Both the distance between expectations (perhaps still realistic in 07-eight) and results, and the growing gap between us and the ones really fighting for it (both in economic potential and in quality) made us distance ourselves from such talk.
But that does not mean a lot, besides psychological make up. We didn't really do anything to justify expectations in the last few years. As some mentioned, the required quality was not that far out of reach, but we just didn't get it. And normally, by October - November that was clear.
I just don't see why this reflects on this year: if we do keep VP and sign MV, it would be the first time in several years we've tried to do the necessary things to make ourselves competitive. Of course, I don't mean to say that this makes us contenders. But it will not be in the realm of imagination: if they do gel, if there's good chemistry there, this could be a very good team (think about it: lose none but shit players, add Pold, Giroud, MV and with a little luck, the "new signing" that is Jack). No, not too far away, me thinks. Not enough to talk about it like it was ridiculous.
