My point was that if (and that's a big IF) RVP changes his mind and wants to sign a contract we should offer him one right away, hence my initial respond was to Shinda's comments along the lines of "fuck him, sell and move on". What Rooney did was far worse yet you don't see him, the club or the fans being unhappy about how it all turned out.

Yep his options are disappearing fast, he might come out with some bollocks about us showing ambition and Wenger talked him into staying.

the best move for van persie right now would be to extend his deal with us. we have title-winning potential if he stays and is healthy, and he's the captain. his family is settled here and he will earn good money, even if not the highest salary possible. for the first time since the invincibles, we have a solid base of good, experienced, mature players that are hungry for success and recognition: van persie, arteta, santos, vermaelen, cazorla, podolski, sagna, mertesacker - to lead the talented young players on the rise: chamberlain, koscielny, chesney, wilshere.

that's one player I like, Llorente. I'd rather RVP do a u-turn though.

There's no way Robin can remain captain if he stays. Whatever happens I really hope that the armband doesn't leave Vermaelen.

Let me rephrase it: There's every chance in the world that he might remain captain if he stays, but I hope the club has more integrity than that.

Depressingly, I'm quite sure we have even less integrity than that.

We'd much rather bend backwards to keep Robin as captain than pay him what he's most probably worth.

However, since our last six (five?) or so captains have sold out, perhaps there would be something to be said for the one that failed to get away as it were. 🙂

on face value (setting aside that the statement was even made in the first place), i didnt really disagree with anything in van persie's statement. last season, he was the best captain we've had since vieira. i'd have no problem at all with him remaining captain if he stays.

who knows, if he said nothing and just signed whatever contract we put in front of him, we probably wouldn't have bothered with giroud and podolski at all.

we'll see what happens, but i'm glad someone from inside the camp called out wenger/gazidis on their bullshit, and it was our captain and a gooner to boot. i'm sure fabregas and henry told wenger the same thing privately. lets face it, our lack of ambition is pretty clear for everyone to see - hopefully that is now a thing of the past.

I wouldn't mind RVP staying captain either. I cant see how that would be a lack of integrity.

I would keep Van Persie as captain if he stayed simply because he's a brilliant captain and the best leader in the team.

In my case, I don't think it would lack integrity to give a re-signed Van Persie the captaincy on the face of it, but I'm a bit sick of us trying to use the captaincy as a carrot to keep stars at the club.

Basically the Arsenal captaincy is worth about £25k/week to us, and seems to go to whoever we're most desperate to hang on to.
