Football would be incredibly dull without emotional attachment. Robin naturally became a fan favorite, so seeing him leave and joining a dispised rival means there is bound to be a load of resentment and hate directed towards him too.

Utd would have to make it worth our while. Perception and image counts for a fair bit, and we can't be seen to let them take our best player unless they are paying over the odds. With Juve it would be slightly different.

Hard to say. I would want about 25 mill from Utd, and they would need to be offering a good 4-5 mill more than anyone else.

You put his going rate at £20m then. Objectively, that's expensive but I imagine that is roughly the amount the club will be looking for.

Speaking of perception and image - think that's one reason why United would bid big for him - he'd be the signing of the summer and it would give them one up on City before the season even starts.
I suspect (now that I've realised loyalty won't play any part in van Persie's next decision) that he'd go for United over City.
I reckon Juventus won't offer us enough, so this situation will really test Wenger's resolve not to supply United with elite players.

Nightmare scenario really in terms of emotions.
It would be fairly soul destroying to see him play for Fergie's lot.

Every summer we hear this nonsense rhetoric, Arsenal are going to sell x to Man Utd. Like fuck we are, we wouldn't sell them a rabid dog let alone our best players.

He's not going to Man Utd.

I don't care what he wants.

I don't care what Ferguson wants.

I don't care what the board want.

As long as Wenger is here we will never sell a player to that mob, especially our captain. He'd rot in the reserves before he went to Man Utd

We've never had that sort of rivalry with City. I know they are lightyears away from us now but selling our best player to them will be a massive psychological blow. We wouldn't have entertained the idea of selling our best striker to them in 2004 and we shouldn't now.

Wenger won't dream of doing it

Okay maybe 98% of it was the salary but my point is he said we wouldn't sell Nasri to Man Utd and we didn't. Whatever the reasons are it didn't happen.

Wenger has never sold a player to them. Why would he start now?

I know we've never had a worse owner in our history and the present board and management are a joke, but if they sold our club captain and top player to the likes of Man U or Tottenham that would be one slap of humiliation too much for me and many supporters too I would imagine, I think I'd be done with Arsenal until the whole mob were overthrown.
If it was done against Wengers will and he had the guts to resign over it, he would be much rehabilitated in my eyes.

I still don't understand why people are so strongly and utterly convinced that Wenger would not sell van Persie to United.

I genuinely think that he would if they were willing to pay the price.

On reflection though, as qs said, this rumour is probably just agent negociating tactics and nonsense.
