Bit random, but yesterday I read this old essay by Sartre, "Anti-Semite and Jew"—it's rather brilliant. PDF here for anyone who wants to check it out.

The anti‐Semite readily admits that the Jew is intelligent and hard‐working; he will even confess himself inferior in these respects. This concession costs him nothing, for he has, as it were, put those qualities in parentheses. Or rather they derive their value from the one who possesses them: the more virtues the Jew has the more dangerous he will be. The anti‐Semite has no illusions about what he is. He considers himself an average man, modestly average, basically mediocre. There is no example of an anti‐Semite's claiming individual superiority over the Jews. But you must not think that he is ashamed of his mediocrity; he takes pleasure in it; I will even assert that he has chosen it. This man fears every kind of solitariness, that of the genius as much as that of the murderer; he is the man of the crowd. However small his stature, he takes every precaution to make it smaller, lest he stand out from the herd and find himself face to face with himself. He has made himself an anti‐Semite because that is something one cannot be alone. The phrase, "I hate the Jews," is one that is uttered in chorus; in pronouncing it, one attaches himself to a tradition and to a community — the tradition and community of the mediocre.

I don't agree with Sartre's analysis of the causes of bigotry, but his descriptions of the character and function of bigotry are extremely perceptive.

Guys if you are into business's read 'what they do not teach you at Harvard business school'. Written by the guy who started IMG. Excellent read.

Maybe Wenger should have a read.

I haven't read that one yet. Read a few his, and I agree, his prose is wonderful. I love The Old Man and the Sea.

I'm listening to Smiley's People now. I think I may have mentioned it a few times, but le Carre is fantastic. George Smiley is a masterful creation. I'd love someone with heaps of money to make a TV series of all the Smiley novels. You'd need a tubby 60 year old person to play George. I know Gary Oldman did a good job in the movie of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Alec Guinness has probably the definitive portrayal, so they'd be big shoes to fill. I've just realised why the actor who reads the audiobooks does an Alec Guinness impersonation when reading Smiley's lines. lightbulb moment

Just finished reading No Country for Old Men. Not sure why it's taken me so long to get around to reading it, but I found a copy in a bookshop while I was down at the beach for a couple of days. Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't think of another author who writes better monologues and dialogue than McCarthy.

Reading Little Drummer Girl. Enjoying it despite myself. Chauvinism abound, but it's sorta the point. Still, can be more than a bit grating.

Have just read Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Biercy, a utopian feminist sf first published in 1976.

Quite a long way ahead of its time, many of the ideas it dwells on are the subjects of current debates so it was an absorbing read.

I've been looking for a new book or series to read. I don't usually get into science fiction too much, but am thinking about trying The Dispossessed (Ursula Le Guin) which sounds interesting. It's probably pretty well known by those who read a bit of sci-fi, so any reviews would be appreciated.

It's extremely good, a classic in my opinion, but nevertheless might not suit you if you're not usually into science fiction. If you're looking at classic sf I'd very highly recommend Roadside Picnic by the Strugatskys. A profound and moving book.

Out of recent sf I'd recommend Gibson's The Peripheral and Peter Watts' Blindsight as two exceptionally good premise-based novels. Ann Leckie's Ancillary series is really good, and very Le Guin-influenced.

Powered through Spam Nation by Brian Krebs which is a great and very personal analysis of spam and hacking trends, conglomerates and users. Good read for anyone interested in cyber security.

Also worked my way through All the Shah's Men to better understand UK and US meddling in Iran and the Middle East. Liked it but it was looooong.
